Iloilo province expands ban on entry of swine, pork products

ILOILO CITY 枛 Iloilo province has widened its ban on pork products, adding Eastern Visayas to areas where pork products are prohibited from entry due to reported African swine fever (ASF) cases.


In a four-page executive order issued on Feb. 13, Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. also directed northern towns in the province Iloilo 搕o closely monitor the possible entry of swine, swine semen, pork, pork products and by-products from the Masbate area.?/p>


ASF is a highly contagious viral disease affecting pigs that can destroy livestock production.


Defensor, in his executive order, cited reports of the Department of Agriculture on new cases of ASF in the towns of Abuyog, La Paz, and Javier in Leyte province and Barangay Luy-a in Aroroy town in Masbate province.


The province earlier implemented a ban on swine, pork products, and by-products from Luzon and Mindanao islands and those from Latvia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Luxembourg, Belgium, Bulgaria, Moldova, Czech Republic, South Africa, Zambia, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Lao People抯 Democratic Republic, South Korea, and China.

FINANCE Secretary Carlos Dominguez III has directed the Bureau of Customs (BOC) to keep a tighter watch over the possible misdeclaration or misclassification of pork shipments entering the country as some importers might attempt to dodge correct payment of tariffs amid the current supply shortfall and retail price spiral.


Dominguez issued the order after President Rodrigo Duterte approved in principle during the Cabinet meeting held on Feb. 3 the recommendation of the Department of Agriculture (DA) to expand the minimum access volume (MAV) allocation for pork imports.


Aimed at boosting pork imports, the DA said the expansion of the MAV will help offset soaring pork prices amid the outbreak of the African swine fever (ASF) in the country, which has significantly reduced the output of local pork producers and jacked up market prices...





Duterte set to decide on higher pork imports proposal

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 22) ?President Rodrigo Duterte may decide later if he would allow the Department of Agriculture's proposal for higher pork imports in an attempt to address the pork price crisis, according to his spokesperson Harry Roque.


During a Palace briefing on Monday, Roque said Duterte will hold a Cabinet meeting today to discuss the National Economic and Development Authority's call to put the entire country under the most relaxed modified general community quarantine, and to explore ways to further boost public trust in COVID-19 vaccines.
